From the Cantor - December 1998

In the past few weeks, the life of our synagogue has reflected the cycle of life itself. It is my privilege to help Congregation Albert through the blessed milestones of births, B'nai Mitzvah, weddings, and life's other achievements. All too often, we are reminded that not every stop on the cycle is joyous; that the price of love is the sadness of parting, and that the cost of life is a precious balance between the bitter and the sweet. We have had to say farewell to David D. Shor, our Rabbi Emeritus. Mark and I cherished Rabbi Shor's warmth, dignity and welcoming presence ever since we first arrived a year and a half ago. With the passing of Hyrum Paglia, Zamir Chorale has lost its sweet-and-low note. With Arlene by his side, Hy helped raise our building and roofed it with music and laughter. These two beloved members of our community have left us a legacy of the importance of study, commitment, and music. We will always have their love of Judaism and enthusiasm for lifelong Torah study. "So long as we live, they too shall live, for they are now a part of us as we remember them."

The subject of light always comes to mind when Chanukah rolls around. Light was the first product of Creation and is the topic of a key prayer in the Sh'ma u-virchoteha (Sh'ma and its Blessings). Light is also at a premium around this time of year. As the days reach their shortest, we must make sure our bodies receive enough sunlight (it doesn't have to be warm) to keep our spirits intact. In that way, we will also be able to give light to others. Once again, I call on your help in making sure that those in our community who are incapable of travelling freely between their home and the synagogue can share in the festival of Chanukah. Members at several retirement facilities, as well as homebound members, will benefit greatly by your smiling visit, your recollection of Chanukah z'mirot, and your hand to hold. You need not own a gorgeous voice. Please contact me immediately. At this time I would like to thank Susan Shadoff, Robin Sena, Alex Jasman, and the Girl Scouts for having made so many people happy before the High Holy Days. Let's continue the tradition together.

Mark joins me in wishing you Chag Chanukah Sameach - a happy, healthy and light-filled Chanukah. We'll see you at the Albuquerque Chanukah Festival and at the Rabbi's Concert and Latke Dinner!

B'shalom u'v'shir,

Cantor Jacqueline L. Shuchat-Marx
